Families Living in Single Room Occupancies (SROs)

Imagine doing every part of your daily life — sleeping, eating, homework, cooking, exercise — in a single 8 by 10 foot space.

Initially built for sailors docking port, Single-Room Occupancy (SRO) hotels today are housing of last resort for families who might otherwise be unsheltered because of a lack of affordable options.

In San Francisco, more than 600 families are in these residential hotels. Most are recent immigrants expecting a short stay who face immense challenges living in SROs and — more importantly — getting out of them. Learn about the hardships faced by SRO families each day and why it’s especially difficult for people in their situation to secure better housing.

We created the infographic below to help explain the difficulties for families that attempt to improve their living situations.
